Puglia is a beautiful region located in the southeastern part of Italy, known for its stunning coastline, historic towns, and delicious cuisine. It’s often referred to as the “heel” of the Italian boot, bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the southeast. Here are some highlights of Puglia:
1. Alberobello
Famous for its trulli, traditional stone dwellings with conical roofs, Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town’s unique architecture and charming streets make it one of the most photographed spots in Puglia.
2. Lecce
Often called the “Florence of the South,” Lecce is known for its magnificent Baroque architecture. The city is home to stunning churches, palaces, and plazas made from local limestone, giving the buildings a warm, golden glow.
3. Polignano a Mare
This picturesque seaside town is perched on cliffs above the Adriatic Sea. Polignano a Mare is famous for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic views. The old town, with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses, is a delight to explore.
4. Matera (in Basilicata, but close to Puglia)
Although technically in the neighboring region of Basilicata, Matera is often visited alongside Puglia. It’s renowned for its ancient Sassi cave dwellings, where people have lived for thousands of years. Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was named a European Capital of Culture in 2019.
5. Gargano National Park
A beautiful natural area in the northern part of Puglia, Gargano National Park offers lush forests, mountains, and stunning coastline. The region is home to charming villages, caves, and wildlife, perfect for nature lovers.
6. Ostuni
Known as the “White City,” Ostuni is famous for its dazzling whitewashed buildings perched on a hilltop, offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and sea. Its maze-like streets are perfect for wandering.
